Prefuse 73

Prefuse 73 is the alias of Guillermo Scott Herren, an experimental hip-hop producer whose material often features MCs buried in the mix to become more a part of the sonic texture than a focal point. Herren began his career working in commercial studios in Atlanta, but later went on to more experimental work. His first record under the Prefuse name, Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives, not only buried but cut up and spliced raps as well as allowing some more straightforward vocals from several MCs. The 2003 follow-up, One Word Extinguisher, carried on in a similar vein. That same year, Warp released Extinguished: Outtakes — a fascinating EP of beats and samples that ran through 23 tracks in about 35 minutes. Surrounded by Silence, the proper successor to One Word Extinguisher, was released in March of 2005. Three months later, an EP of recordings made with the band the Books appeared titled Reads the Books. Herren has also worked under his own name and that of Savath & Savalas and Delarosa & Asora.

The Hood Internet

ABX (pronounced like three consecutive letters) and STV SLV (pronounced "steve sleeve") are collectively known as The Hood Internet. For the past three years, the duo have been chewing up the indie, pop, rap and R&B landscapes and spitting out pure fire. Like laptop-armed alchemists, they draw from their expansive interest in the many faces of modern music and re-imagine songs for mass public consumption through www.thehoodinternet.com.

Nearly 400 mixes and literally millions of free downloads later, The Hood Internet continue to ricochet across North America like an Arkanoid ball, bringing their arsenal of reassembled tracks to crowded dancefloors. And the dance parties have definitely been ignited in every city they roll through, not to mention holding it down at Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Monolith Festival, SXSW, CMJ and Canadian Music Week. In the meantime, there are always new mixes and mixtures on the way from The Hood, with original works and re-mixes filling the spaces in-between. And so much more music on the way! All eyes on the Hood.

Overcasters

Overcasters isn't a bunch of mope-rockers who came late to the Manchester scene plunder party only to shy away from the precipice of Ian Curtis' tortured psyche on the way to the dance club. The melancholy you'll hear in the music isn't born of anguish and despair. Rather, it is the expression of a preference for deep emotional experiences even if they leave you shaken to the core. Beyond the indigo atmospherics, Overcasters are a rock and roll band. Its defiant spirit and sonic exuberance can be heard across the entirety of its latest album, The Whole Sea is Raging.

The Don'ts and Be Carefuls

In the spring of 2008, after solidifying their line-up, The Don'ts and Be Carefuls started to imagine up some songs and began playing their first shows ... [performing] the sort of music that some have deemed "fun" yet "intense"... So is this band. Hot to make you dance. Releasing its debut EP, Risk Assessment, [The DBCs] have captured the first rush of its songwriting without losing an ounce of the heartfelt emotions and tangible sense of innocence that characterizes the band's sound.

Max Kauffman

My work is a return to earlier times, a post apocalyptic d.i.y. culture, where structures and life itself are cobbled out of anything at hand. Beasts and plants flourish where society has faltered. Bone, wood, and scraps hold tenuously together the strands of this dystopia. Though formerly there was a butting of heads between nature and man/civilization, now there is a newfound harmony, where these animals and cities are now intertwined. As things crumbled around them, they have set aside their differences, and are ready to make it work together to survive. The cycle of life and death is explored, but not in a gory, trite manner. Rather as a celebration, or acceptance, a beautiful thing. A transition, a way to feed the next generation.
